BASS & VOICE

Melanie Bong & Peter Čudek

At the age of 19, Melanie had a transformative encounter with the legendary jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan, who became her mentor and remains the most profound influence on her vocal style to this day. Melanie was particularly captivated by Jordan’s unique ability to weave her Native American heritage into her music, creating a deeply personal and culturally resonant sound. This blend of storytelling, emotional depth, and cultural identity inspired Melanie to explore her own voice with authenticity and creativity, shaping her approach to jazz singing.

Sheila Jordan, a trailblazer in the jazz world, holds the distinction of being the first vocalist to perform on stage accompanied solely by a double bass, a bold and innovative choice that she continues to master with remarkable success. This minimalist setup highlights her vocal prowess and the intimate interplay between voice and bass, creating a raw, conversational dynamic that has become a hallmark of her performances. Jordan’s pioneering approach has not only influenced countless singers but also redefined the possibilities of jazz vocal expression.

Together with the acclaimed bassist Peter Čudek, Melanie embarks on an ambitious musical journey to explore and reinterpret Sheila Jordan’s iconic bass-and-voice framework. This collaboration is no small feat, as it demands both technical precision and emotional vulnerability to honor Jordan’s legacy while infusing their own artistic voices. For Melanie and Čudek, this project is a thrilling challenge, offering a fresh perspective on a minimalist yet profound format. Audiences can expect an evocative experience, as the duo delves into the nuances of this intimate musical dialogue, blending tradition with innovation in a celebration of Jordan’s enduring influence.

Peter Čudek

Peter Cudek, born in Žilina, Slovakia, began on electric bass before switching to double bass under Juraj Kalasz’s guidance. He studied at his hometown conservatory, then at Munich’s Richard-Strauss-Konservatorium under Paulo Cardoso from 2004. In 2012, he trained with Ron Carter in New York. He gained international acclaim through collaborations with artists like Christian Elsässer, Harry Sokal, and Lisa Wahlandt. Since 2015, Cudek has been part of Trio Elf, recording MusicBoxMusic (2016) and The Brazilian Album (2018). He also leads his own trio and has worked with groups like the World Percussion Ensemble and the Matthias Bublath Trio. Tours include the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, Hong Kong, UK, Scotland, and Guatemala.

The double bass of low-frequency virtuoso Peter Cudek is almost to be envied. Not only for the splendid palette of plucked, caressed, or arrow-swift cascades of sound he elicits from it, but also for the approach of this exceptional young bassist, who moves with his otherwise rather unwieldy instrument as if with an ideal dance partner on stage.
